On 20th to 22nd June this year, the IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for AeroSpace will take place in Rome so, to celebrate, here is an example of what Solartron Metrology can do for the aerospace industry.  It goes without saying how important accuracy is in this industry but the complex parts and shapes can make taking measurements difficult.  We have probes and sensors to suit even the most difficult operation but, in this instance, we found that two particular types of probes were ideal for measuring jet engine turbine blades.


Increased Sensor Connectivity

The latest product to join our range, the Wireless Connection Module helps customers who need to use multiple wireless sensors simultaneously, rather than being restricted to just seven, as was the case before.

Increasing the capacity for connectivity solves the issues of customers having to continuously swap sensors in and out - a both inconvenient and ineffective use of time. As the Wireless Connection Module works with our Orbit Digital Measurement Network, manufacturers now have the limitless connectivity. While six sensors can be connected to the Wireless Connection Module at any one time, as many modules as are needed can be connected to a PC using the Orbit network.

Digital Spring Push Probes

Dimensional accuracy and the correct surface finish are essential final specification requirements of jet engine turbine blades.  In this instance, a company specialising in machining and casting allow metals like aluminium and titanium, which are often used in aircraft engines, needed to measure the dimensions of turbine blades after surface grinding.  Our standard DP range of Digital Spring Push Probes were ideal for this application because they have a very high resolution, excellent linearity and high data speed.  With long life precision bearings, they maintain accuracy through millions of cycles and have repeatability up to 0.15microns.  The probes were placed at desired locations on the turbines and their measurements fed into a digital readout which was then linked to a PC running a statistical process control system.  Using this data, operators can monitor the performance of the grinding process and the quality of the finished parts with traceable records from the start of the process through to the finished part.

Digital Pneumatic Probes

Measuring turbine blades can be challenging because of their complex curve shape but also because the position of the blade can vary greatly in free space which can lead to inaccurate readings in high volumes.  Our 10mm Digital Pneumatic Probes were perfect to resolve these issues as they are linear along the full travel and can resolve up to 0.01microns.  Because of the shape of the blade, the relationship between the different measuring points needs to be maintained.  As such, measurements need to be taken as quickly as possible to stop the movement of the blade causing false readings.  By combining these probes with the Orbit 3 Network, this isn’t an issue as it can take 4,000 readings a second, per probe.

Combining our probes with the
Orbit Network allows operators to integrate different measurement position and control sensors for fast accurate measuring.  Being usable with a wide range of Solatron sensors as well as third party sensors means it can collate large amounts of reliable data in easy to use formats by being compatible with Excel.
