What is metrology?

Metrology is the science of measurement. In the world of industry and manufacturing, it is the technology behind the quality assurance processes that make sure that everything from planes and cars to computers and cups function how they should.

This technology, such as Solartron measurement sensors, is used by manufacturers to make measurements to within a millionth of a centimetre. These measurements can be confidently compared on a global basis.

Which industries use this measurement sensor technology?

A wide range of industries use precision measurement devices, such as measurement sensors, to ensure that what they manufacture meets strict industry standards and regulations. For example, precision measuring systems solutions are widely used in the agriculture, automotive, aerospace, construction, energy, environment and medical technology sectors.

What is a linear variable differential transformer?

A linear variable differential transformer, or LVDT, is an electrical transformer used for measuring linear displacement (position) or, put more simply, a position sensor.

What are displacement sensors?

Analogue and digital displacement sensors, also referred to as displacement gauges, are contact measurement devices used to compare the position of an object with its reference position, and measure any difference between the two. Typical measurements are an object’s height, thickness and width.

What is a wireless sensor?

A wireless sensor, such as Solartron’s WiGauge, is a measurement sensor that can collect data from process control instruments without the need for cables. As such, the gauging process is not restricted by cable length or routing, or the risk of cable damage.

What is a wireless sensor network?

A wireless sensor network comprises a group of autonomous wireless measurement devices and a secure gateway through which the measurement data from the devices are fed to dedicated computers or programmable logic controllers.

What are non-contact sensors?

Non-contact measurement sensors, such as the Solartron Non-Contact Laser Triangulation Transducer, are used for applications for which a contact gauging sensor is unsuitable. They avoid the wear and tear associated with contact sensors. Non-contact measurement sensors are widely used across the industry spectrum, including in the automotive, medical, industrial and aerospace sectors.

What are gauging probes?

Analogue and digital gauging probes are devices used to quickly and efficiently measure object parameters. Examples include conventional pencil-style gauging probes, feather-touch probes and ultra-feather-touch probes.

What are feather-touch gauging probes?

Feather-touch gauging probes provide low, repeatable tip forces and are designed to gauge delicate surfaces, such as car windscreens, television tubes, pharmaceutical bottles, electro-mechanical components and plastic parts.

What is the Orbit3 digital measurement system?

The Solartron Orbit3 digital measurement networking system is a fast and straightforward way to network industrial measurement sensors of all kinds. It is a means of building large and flexible sensor-and-gauging systems with a single common interface, regardless of sensor technology.

A key feature of this digital measuring system is high data-transfer rates that provide dynamic and synchronised capabilities for the measurement of moving parts. In addition, the measurement network allows a wide range of third-party sensors to be connected, including pressure, temperature and force transducers.

What are optical linear encoders

Optical linear encoders are used in combination with scales as part of a digital measuring system to measure position (and velocity and motion). These digital devices are used when a high degree of precision measurement is required.

What are laser triangulation sensors?

Laser triangulation sensors are measurement sensors that determine the position of an object by measuring the reflected light from an object’s surface.

There are two main categories of laser triangulation sensors: high-resolution lasers and proximity-type lasers. High-resolution lasers are generally used in displacement monitoring applications that need stability, high precision and low temperature drift. Proximity lasers are usually used to detect the presence of a component.
